I can’t help thinking that we should do away with the rules that to progress within the ASC we have had to have held other posts. For example if you want to be District President you should have been a Club/Area President.
In the South District this rule has been breached on numerous occasions to to the benefit of the members / Area/ District / National.
It’s a hurdle put in front of the ‘movers and shakers’ who could be fast tacked onwards and upwards. What do you think?

Two points… it is often difficult to find people to serve in any of the offices. Having a promotion ladder, so to speak, has a tendency to produce an elite cadre of office bearers.

I am in two minds about this. I believe that experience is worth a lot and that we need capable people to take office at all levels. In an ideal world, members would serve on the club committee, in several roles, and then move on to a job at Area before joining the District Council.
The downside is that finding new District Officers under this scheme is very difficult. It can be hard to get people to serve on a club committee. In the east area it is almost impossible to find an Area President and if this is repeated in other areas finding a new District president is also very difficult.
I believe that only those with good, solid experience should serve as District or National Officers, but not having been an Area President should not in itself stop someone moving to a higher office.

I have to say I agree entirely; we need to do away with these rules. We have similar issues in the Central district (exacerbated by the contraction in membership and clubs). The organisation needs new ideas and new people in senior positions. The key question when appointing/electing office bearers is will they be any good!
